SmartLipo™ is a laser that disrupts fat cells, and coagulates the underlying blood vessels. The hemostatic properties of the laser result in less bleeding and bruising, less trauma and less down time. How does SmartLipo™ work?
SmartLipo™ is the first and only laser-assisted lipolysis system to offer a revolutionary and minimally invasive procedure for the removal of fat. Using a high-powered laser, SmartLipo™ is a new LaserBodySculpting™ procedure with less downtime and side effects than traditional liposuction. It is ideal for treating localized deposits of unwanted fat, fat tissue irregularities and for coagulating tissue leading to a tightening effect on the skin.
The use of the SmartLipo™ technologies provide results far superior to that obtained with traditional liposuction alone.
SmartLipo™ is a minimally invasive procedure using a 1 mm cannula with a laser fiber inserted into the skin. The cannula is moved back and forth delivering the laser's energy directly to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away the fat. The laser energy interacts with the dermis, resulting in collagen shrinkage.
Due to the cannula's small size, SmartLipo™ can be performed under local anesthesia. Who is a good candidate for SmartLipo™ lipolysis?
If you have areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise, then you're a candidate for SmartLipo™. Ideal candidates are in good health, a normal body weight and have realistic expectations for the results. Patients with a history of significant cardiac or endocrine problems are not candidates for SmartLipo™.
What body regions can be treated with SmartLipo™?
SmartLipo™ is ideal for treating small areas of the face, arms, neck, knees, bra strap, back, abdomen, breasts (gynecomastia), inner thighs, and areas of loose flabby skin. It is excellent for smoothing out uneven areas following liposuction and lipodissolve. While results can be seen immediately, the final results will be seen after approximately four months.
How many treatments will I need?
For most patients, typically only one treatment is required. The session may last for 45 minutes to one hour for each area treated. One to three areas can be treated at a time depending on the size of fat collections. Laser lipolysis is also an ideal choice for "touchups" and revisions.
Does SmartLipo™ produce lasting results?
Adults do not create new fat cells. When a person gains weight, that person's fat cells simply expand. Should you gain weight, the fat is usually deposited in areas where the procedure was not performed.
What will I experience postoperatively?
Postoperatively it is not unusual to expect some swelling, slight bruising, and mild discomfort similar to muscle aches after a strenuous workout. Compression garments are worn for anywhere from one to three weeks postoperatively while the treated areas are healing. We suggest two days of rest although some patients may be able to return to work immediately after the procedure. You should refrain from hot tubs are strenuous exercise for two weeks.
Does SmartLipo™ treat cellulite?
SmartLipo™ is not designed to specifically treat cellulite. However, the procedure will improve the body's shape and may improve cellulite to a certain degree as it tightens sagging skin.
What will I experience during the procedure?
SmartLipo™ is performed under local anesthesia so there is no pain during the procedure. Since you'll be awake you may wish to bring an iPod® with your favorite music.

Steps to Your Body Contouring Procedure:
Your journey to revealing your true, slimmer self will look something like this:
1. Before Having SmartLipo™
- Consultation. An essential first step is your consultation, which will take place at Dr. Rotskoff's office. Although there are limits to the amount of fat that can be removed, we can assist you with your decision about potential areas for sculpting, the results you can expect, and the recovery process. Prepare questions in advance and be sure we have the opportunity to address all of your concerns. Bring a list of all your current medications and supplements to your appointment.
- Informed Consent. Dr. Rotskoff will discuss potential complication and review the surgery consent form with you. Because the SmartLipo™ represent the state-of-the-art in body contouring technology, there have been fewer reported complications (such as pain, bruising, and swelling) associated with their use than with traditional liposuction.
- Confirmation of Candidacy. Once Dr. Rotskoff reviews your medical history and compares your body reshaping potential to your expectations, he will evaluate whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. Considerations that assist your him in making this determination include:
- Skin elasticity
- Morbid obesity
- Unrealistic expectations
- Pregnancy
- Medical history / current medications
- Measurements and "Before" Photographs. Pre-operative measurements and photographs will be used for comparison post-operatively.
- Day-of-Procedure Instructions. We will provide specific instructions to prepare you for your procedure.
2. During Your Body Contouring Procedure
- Sedation. Dr. Rotskoff uses a combination of oral and intramuscular medication to provide a pleasant level of safe conscious sedation.
- Aspiration. Suction and massage of the sculpted site remove emulsified tissue while leaving blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue relatively intact.
- Laser Lipolysis. SmartLipo™ is used for final recontouring and treatment of the dermis to shrink the collagen and tighten the skin.
3. After Your Recontouring Procedure
- Recovery. Once the numbing effects of the anesthetic agent wear off, you may experience some discomfort. Dr. Rotskoff will discuss whether over-the-counter and/or prescription pain medication is right for you. Initially, expect some fluid drainage from your incisions.
- Compression Garment. You will wear a compression garment home from the procedure; we will require you to wear such a garment under your clothing for a period ranging from two to six weeks post-operatively, depending upon the body area(s) treated and the amount of fat removed. This will provide you with comfort and support, and will help your skin settle to your new contours. It is critical that you follow your doctor's instructions regarding the wearing of this garment.
- Follow-up Appointments. While you may feel and look terrific, it is essential that you keep your follow-up appointments so that Dr. Rotskoff can monitor your progress. Imagine how rewarding it will be to compare your measurements and see your "After" pictures!
